In the social age of selfies, feeling confident about your smile is more important than ever.
A confident, bright smile isn’t just about showing the world you look fantastic. It’s also a critical factor in maintaining healthy self-esteem and feeling good on the inside.
If you are living with high, receding or uneven gums – or what’s often referred to as a ‘gummy smile’ – you’ll know just how hard it is to show off your best side.
Gum contouring is a simple cosmetic procedure in which the gums are reshaped to give them a more natural look. It’s a versatile treatment, which can be used to even out uneven gums, lower the appearance of high gums and treat receding gums.
Less than an hour is all it takes to give your gums just the right shape, length and amount on show, leaving you free to smile confidently again.
Aqua Dental offers two types of gum contouring carried out under local anaesthetic from London based patients.
Surgical Contouring
Surgical contouring achieves much the same effect as laser contouring but uses a scalpel instead of a laser. Depending on how much tissue is removed, the gums may be resealed using dental sutures.
Depending on the amount of tissue to be removed, contouring takes from 20 minutes to an hour. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic to reduce discomfort.
Patients may experience mild soreness or tender gums for around a week after leaving the clinic. Your dentist can recommend over-the-counter pain medication to help manage discomfort and advise on an aftercare regime to aid recovery.
It’s important to continue brushing and flossing afterwards. However, you’ll need to take special care not to irritate the gums, and a soft-bristled brush is recommended. For the first few days, you should also stick to soft foods like pasta and vegetables – food with sharp edges or seeds definitely isn’t recommended.
